The owls can be difficult to photograph because of branches between you & the Owl, but it's important to stick to the paths to avoid disturbing the birds - some visitors to the reserve feel the need to climb over the fence to get a closer view which only serves to spook the Owls.

Bittern Botaurus stellaris Marton Mere nature reserve Blackpool342 viewsthis was easily my closest sighting of a Bittern at Marton Mere, but sadly there was half a reedbed between me & it & I was shooting directly into the sun. For this shot the bird lept up off the ice & into the reeds with a couple of flaps of its wings, it then dropped down again & melted away into the reeds.
