Bittern241 viewsthis was easily my closest sighting of a Bittern at Marton Mere, but sadly there was half a reedbed between me & it & I was shooting directly into the sun. Still, despite the poor photos, it was a thrilling sighting.

Bittern Botaurus stellaris Marton Mere nature reserve Blackpool252 viewsthis was easily my closest sighting of a Bittern at Marton Mere, but sadly there was half a reedbed between me & it & I was shooting directly into the sun. For this shot the bird lept up off the ice & into the reeds with a couple of flaps of its wings, it then dropped down again & melted away into the reeds.

Pink Footed Geese105 viewsI'm guessing that these are Pink footed Geese, but didn't get close enough to get a definite id. Just part of a huge flock photographed from the A588 between Pilling & Cockerham

Long-eared Owl378 viewsone of the roosting Long-eared Owls @ Marton Mere nature reserve Blackpool, regular winter residents here. The owls can be difficult to photograph because of branches between you & the Owl, but it's important to stick to the paths to avoid disturbing the birds - some visitors to the reserve feel the need to climb over the fence to get a closer view which only serves to spook the Owls.
